: A lone wild elephant trampled a man to death at Chelur village, near Pulpally. The dead has been identified as Vitthappa Gowder, alias Vithayya, 55, of B Shedgiri, Coorg, Karnataka. Three others were injured in the incident. The animal, expected to have strayed from Karnataka forests, was first sighted by a group of dairy farmers at a plantation near Padichira town. They informed the Forest Department. The elephant took refuge in a wooded area inside the plantation. The animal, apparently provoked by the uproar of the crowd, started running through Padichira town injuring many.
